Following on from Patrick's post, the easiest way to select your new queens is to wait for the first colony to swarm or attempt to. Remove all queencells. Wait a week and remove all the queencells again. By this time there will be lots more young bees to feed the young larvae you put in from your selected queen. (Miller, cupkit, graft or whatever). Give them a gentle feed and they will draw queencells well which should be sealed after 5 days. Then distribute in 6 -7 days time - before the queens emerge.

Hi Folks

Thanks for all of your advice, much appreciated. Santa brought me Woodward's book (its excellent) and a decent Cupkit so wish me luck!

Thanks again

Derek

For me, queen rearing is the most enjoyable part of this game, so you should have fun even including the mistakes and disappointments which will happen! It's certainly much more fun than clearing supers, lugging them about and extracting!

Good luck Derek. I agree with Adam , for me, queen rearing is the best part of Beekeeping.
