All mine were force fed syrup in autumn topped off with homebrew sugar blocks on the topbars and uniformly insulated.
There were two that shouldn't really have gone to winter without being amalgamated with others but they had a half kilo of Candipoline as well and seem to have got this far ok.

I had a check this morning and it's one of these two that's the odd one out.

They have barely touched the solid food but there's a thick carpet of cappings all across underneath.
All the other colonies have done the opposite in lesser or greater degrees
What's going on in there?
There's a mouseguard still in place

In my experience I find some will eat fondant first and others that will eat it very last. There is occasionally a colony that would rather starve and die than eat fondant..LOL

Last winter I tried the mountain camp method which was a Kg of sugar poured in to an eke directly on top of the crownboard. The bees never touched it until the end of Feb then demolished it in about a week.

You never can tell with bees.

Thanks Mick
Good to know
They're nothing worth worrying about but I'd like to hang on to them if possible for some nuc building I've got planned.
