Sometimes you need to recombine / unite vertical splits of the same colony, if the new queen failed or you just don’t want more colonies. Then I quite often don’t worry with anything and just remove the split board. Even simpler.

Just at the moment with bees on edge due to weather, I probably would go with the smoke option at the same time even in that case.

Sounds good to me re reuniting vertical splits!
I'm still liking the adapted snelgrove method where even keeping the entrance the same way in the old brood box above stops the swarming instinct due to the fact the flyers will return in the box below?!
As its so close I wondered whether some bees would sniff and find the old hive above but, obviously you've tried it and it works for you and then makes it simpler to combine with both entrances same direction?!
Lots of smoke.......
