I was wondering how many non Home Counties folk enter the NHS. Are there any stats available showing where entries come from, or stats on the winners?

I did enter about 6 years ago. Traveling from the Northeast the cost is awful. Fuel, food, hotel for several nights was well over £600. If it is a true national event it should move around the country to make it accesable to all. Problem is it has several local association shows involved which fills out the show so its going to be stuck there forever. Southerners also get a nose bleed if they travel past Watford never mind Birmingham.

Not much of a spectator sport. :? What else happens at the NHS?

It's not just looking at honey, although if that's your thing?

Lots of lectures and workshops too.

It is a long way to travel. I went to the Isle of Man for a BIBBA bash a few years ago (2016) which was somewhat out of the way, but interesting none the less. The most enjoyable bit was Randy Oliver (Scientific Beekeeping) making fun of some of the breeding aims of BIBBA!

I had a thought, why couldn’t there be a “couriered in class” ie from places north of Watford, to allow people to send their jars in, and get them returned. We all get deliveries these days, so surely it’s something that could happen.
II know it might cause a few issues with having to change the standards a little regarding scratched or dented lids, but then at least it might then be actually be considered to be a “National” show, rather than one that is largely attended by beekeepers with time (and money) on their hands or from London and Home Counties.

One of the criteria is no honey inside the lid's inside surface, something that would happen if any liquid honey was tilted.....as would be likely to happen in the post.

Thats not a bad idea polomadh but it would require a fundamental change in judging.
I entered 3 local shows this year and the standards of judging vary so much you really don't have a clue what is required unless you have experience of the judge. One event I entered had the most pedantic judge I have ever encountered and I have won quite a few awards in my short time as a beekeeper. The rules are supposedly standard but the interpredation by the judges varies massively. No honey on the inside of the lid should be the first thing to go !

You could have 100 entries in a class but if the show judge thinks none meet the required standard then they won't issue a single place. Its a very regressive policy, why make such an effort to enter if there is no reward. I had a few entries this year that got 3rd place with no 1st or 2nd awarded. Its stupid, I was 1st amongst what was entered, why should I bother ? I have beat many show judges in my time and imho have a good idea what is req. No wonder newbees don't want to enter shows.
