What is the little red number one or sometimes two near the bell beside my user name.

A notification - ie if someone has quoted you in a message or sent you a PM.
It doesn't make it very clear - I've had a few late PM replies from people who hadn't seen it, I just thought they were ignoring me

How stupid a system is that, clear your sent messages and it removes them from whoever you sent them to as well
